The cemetery contains the graves of thousands of Boston's citizens, including many Irish immigrants. A group of prominent Boston Irish supported the establishment of a permanent and safe burial place for the people of the Irish island. It has been said that over two million Irish immigrants came to Boston in the 1840s alone. In the 1840s and 1850s the Irish-Americans set up their own cemeteries and asked the state to allow them to come to this area; this new cemetery was to be very different from the others. As of October 31, 2011, Vine Hill Cemetery had over 2,870,000 interments. History Vine Hill Cemetery was founded by a group of Irishmen in the 1840s. The original intent of the founders was to provide a new public cemetery, in place of an old burying ground in the North End that was being used primarily as a burying ground for the poor and unwashed. The first burial was made on August 20, 1842. The Vine Hill Cemetery was one of the many Irish cemeteries that were built to establish a permanent site for the Irish immigrants to Boston. At the time, many of the Irish immigrants lived in urban centers like Boston. Most of these urban cities were not always very hospitable to the Irish. The Irish immigrants had to move to other cities to find jobs and would often be abused and taunted in the process. It wasn't until the 1840s when more Irish immigrants began to move to cities like Boston. Many of them settled in Boston and were exposed to the hard work it took to survive in the city. This led them to believe that Boston was the place to be. In 1845, the Superintendent of Public Cemeteries set down the criteria that a city must meet in order to be considered for a cemetery. The cemetery that was planned would be located in the old burying ground in the North End. On November 6, 1844, the Massachusetts Legislature passed an act to establish the area for a new 648931e174
